Adopt 8: 14-year-old Newra holds out hope for forever home

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (NEWS 8) — She only has four more years left, before she "ages out" of the foster care system, but 14-year-old Newra has faith she'll find a forever home before it's too late.

In this Adopt 8, our Marcella Lee introduces us to a confident girl, who is hoping her future forever family is watching, right now.

Newra has been in the foster care system since she was 9 years old.

"I've never really had a family because I've moved from foster home to foster home,” she said.

That's why Newra says she would cherish nothing more than this:

"Basically, just to have a nice family and to see what me having a family can make me become.”

Newra says staff members at the group homes do the best they can, but what she's longing for are parents.

“When you could just go to two people and they're going to be there 24/7 and provide for you and take care of you,” said Newra. “I never had a family like that so it's like I can't miss what I didn't have, but it would be like nice to know what it really means to have one.”

Newra is an aspiring singer-songwriter who expresses her hopes, dreams and fears through music.

“She's very resourceful. She has a very positive attitude,” said protective services worker Karen Mulcahey. “She's just amazing. She loves to sing, and she writes her own songs. And she really wants to record. She wants to record her own music, so we're looking into something - a program she can do that with.”

Newra says she doesn't resent the path her life has taken her.

“Without my past, I wouldn't be here, and without me here, there wouldn't be no past, make sense?” she said.

This philosophical teen knows though you can't change your past you can create a better future and when she thinks about her life, years from now, she knows exactly what kind of mom she wants to be, to her own kids.

"Have them very active. If they're into sports, put them in sports, if they're into art, singing, put them in whatever they like, whatever they're interested in,” she said.

It's the type of life she's grown up without so far, but Newra has hope there's still time for her to find a forever family.

“[I want] someone's who basically going to do the same thing that I'm going to do for my kid: be there, be outgoing, that likes to cook, or likes to go out, or likes to go to the movies,” said Newra “Someone who's actually going to sit down and help me with my homework and not make me do it by myself. At the end of the day, i just want a loving family.”
