SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – In this Adopt 8 segment, we take you behind-the-scenes of a special photo shoot for the making of the 2017 Join the Team Calendar.
This is the 10th calendar edition featuring Chargers players and Adopt 8 children and we’re celebrating this big milestone with a look at some of the calendar's success stories through the years.
Former Chargers player Luis Castillo returned to the practice field for a special reunion with a nine-year-old girl named Diamond.
A lot has changed for both of them since they first met almost a decade ago.
An updated photo of Diamond will be included in the 2017 Join the Team Calendar, which is an extra special 10th edition, showcasing several of the success stories through the years, including Diamond's story.
“To be a part of the calendar and to see the benefits of it, the real benefits, to meet a child that was adopted. To know that child had a home and that someone cared for her, loves her and is there to guide her along the years, it means so much,” said Castillo.
During his time with the Chargers, Castillo helped raise awareness about the need for adoptive families by appearing in the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 calendars with children waiting to find a forever home.
“I remember us having fun. We walked around for a little bit. We had a good time. It was lovely,” continued Castillo.
Back then, Castillo knew he was playing an important role.
“It's a great cause. We get to help in a calendar that if in any way can help a child get adopted it's obviously a great, great cause,” Castillo added.
But admits he wasn't able to appreciate the magnitude of it all.
“For me, I didn't have kids at the time,” he explained.
But he does now and is a father of three.
“I had no idea when I was doing these adoption calendars, and now, I understand the significance of it now,” Castillo said.
Diamond's parents Danielle and George have adopted a total of six children along with their four biological kids. They are grateful for the long-standing partnership between the San Diego Chargers, the County of San Diego and Adopt 8 to find forever families for waiting children.
“I appreciate it. San Diego, you know, it's what San Diego do, and if they can use their Chargers, whatever they can use to get some awareness for the program, it's good for me,” Danielle said.
“To be doing 10 years of this and to have so many different players,” continued Castillo. “You know you're not only touching the lives of the kids and teaching them, or helping the community adopt these kids, you're also touching the lives of the players.”
The 2017Join the Team Calendar will be revealed and handed out at the Chargers-Dolphins game November 13 with more distribution locations to be announced.
