Family of six shares their success story

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - After struggling with infertility issues, a local couple decided to go a different route. When Plan A didn't work, they turned to another Plan A - as in A for adoption.

Michael and Emily always knew they wanted a big family, but it took them three long and emotional years, to be blessed with their first son Christian.

“The doctor said Christian was a miracle, and we couldn't have any more,” said Michael.

No more biological children perhaps, but this couple wasn't going to let that throw them off course and they turned to San Diego County Adoptions instead.

“We thought that we should adopt them out of foster care because kids need homes in San Diego. So we decided to do that out of foster care,” added Emily.

Michael and Emily first took in Jacob as a foster child and when he became available for adoption, they made him a permanent part of the family.

“We got Jacob when he was right out of the hospital. We adopted him when he was 19-months-old and a few years later we got Tracy when he was two-months-old and his baby sister came, 16 months later,” explained Emily.

The youngest two, Tracy and Nancy, are full biological siblings whose adoptions were just finalized this past November.

“We love it. It's not the traditional way to build a family but we wouldn't trade it for anything. We give kids a home that ordinarily wouldn't have a home,” Emily added.

So, what does 13-year-old Christian think of having three younger siblings?

“Some days I like it,” Christian laughs. “Other days, not so much, but overall I enjoy them.

All joking aside, he says he can't imagine being an only child.

“There's people to play with, people to hang out with,” he said.

Michael and Emily encourage others to adopt as well, assuring parents who already have biological kids that the love you feel for an adopted child is just as strong.

“There's no difference between biological. God put us here to raise children and that's what we're here for,” said Michael.

And the blessings they say come back to you a hundred fold.

“Go out and do it, you know. You never know what you're going to get unless you go out and do it,” Michael.
