CBS NEWS 8

KFMB-TV was the first television station in San Diego to go on the air when it flipped the switch in 1949. KFMB-TV News, also known as CBS News 8, has been the top-rated news station for most of its history, with local weekday newscasts at 4:30 a.m., 5:00 a.m., 6:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 5:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 11:00 p.m. Weekend newscasts air at 5:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 11:00 p.m. KFMB-TV is the only station in the city to have maintained the same network affiliation (CBS) throughout its history.

Some famous CBS News 8 alumni include former weather girl Raquel Welch, talk-show host Regis Philbin, TV host Sarah Purcell and CNN and former CBS anchor Paula Zahn. KFMB-TV has been home to such anchors as Ray Wilson, Harold Keen, Michael Tuck, Allison Ross and sportscaster Ted Leitner.

Other notable KFMB alumni include, Dawn Fratangelo, Marty Levin, Margaret Radford, Susan Lichtman (Taylor), Jim Laslavic, Stan Miller, Pamela Davis, Loren Nancarrow, Denise Yamada and Hal Clement. Larry Himmel, remembered for his comedic role on KFMB-TV’s locally produced “San Diego at Large,” (1985-1988) continues to offer his quick wit and unique perspective as a member of the CBS News 8 team.

KFMB-TV airs top-rated daytime programming including Dr. Phil, Judge Judy, The Price Is Right, Young and the Restless and The Talk. Primetime includes such CBS hits as The Big Bang Theory, Two Broke Girls, CSI, Survivor, NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles. The Late Show with David Letterman airs late night.

KFMB-TV has been home of the San Diego Chargers since 1998, when it secured the local broadcast rights to the preseason games. In addition, KFMB broadcasts Chargers football games as part of the CBS NFL package. KFMB-TV also airs Chargers games that are produced by ESPN and the NFL Network.

In 2007, KFMB-TV became the first station to broadcast local news in High Definition.
